Licence exchange Hola Driving licence exchange

Can I exchange my licence? Pick your country.

The issuing country decides everything — not your nationality, and not which state or region licensed you. The verdict below comes from the same table our own caseworkers gate on, reviewed against the DGT's published list.

Nothing is sent anywhere — this runs in your browser.

Or jump straight in

Three routes. Your licence is on one of them.

Spain doesn't assess you as a driver; it assesses the licence. The issuing country decides everything — not your nationality, and not which state or region licensed you.

No test

EU & EEA licences

A straight administrative swap: your entitlement dates carry over, no exams. The catch is timing — an indefinite-validity licence must be exchanged two years after you register as resident.

No test

Agreement countries

Spain holds bilateral convenios with around thirty non-EU countries: the UK since 2023, plus Switzerland, most of Latin America, Japan, Korea, Ukraine and Morocco. Exchange without a test, but on a clock.

Spanish test

Everywhere else

The US, Canada, Australia, India, China. No agreement in force means no exchange exists at any price, from anyone. The route is the Spanish licence itself: theory in English, then a practical.

Before you start

Have these to hand and it takes about five minutes

What you need

  • Your driving licence Both sides. In date — if it's expired or carries no expiry date, tell us and we'll look at your case personally.
  • Your NIE or TIE Your residence card, or the green A4 NIE certificate. The canje is filed against your NIE, and you must be resident in Spain.
  • One photo, 32 × 26 mm The Spanish carnet size — any photo booth in Spain knows it. You'll bring the print to the appointment too.
  • A phone with a camera That's the whole toolkit. No scanner, no printer, no Spanish required.

What you don't need

  • A driving test — not on the exchange routes
  • A cita previa — we hunt it
  • A trip to the bank for the tasa
  • A gestor
  • A word of Spanish

One thing only you can do: the psicotécnico, where your route needs it — a 20-minute aptitude check (eyesight, hearing, coordination) at an authorised centre near you, typically €40–60 paid at the centre. The centre files the result straight into the DGT system, and we tell you exactly when to go so it can't expire mid-process.

Photograph your licence. We'll take it from there.
